Frequently Asked Questions
-
I specialize in documentary and fine art family photography for Washington DC families. My sessions capture authentic, candid moments as well as lightly directed portraits, blending artistic vision with real-life storytelling.
-
Documentary family photography focuses on authentic everyday moments, rather than fully posed images. I observe and photograph your family naturally, creating a story-driven collection of images that reflect your unique personalities, connections, and life as it unfolds. When I photograph traditional portraits I do give direction, but still encourage natural and comfortable posing that works for everyone in your family.
-
Yes! My sessions combine lightly directed portraits with spontaneous, candid moments. This ensures you have timeless images of your family while also capturing the joy, connection, and personality that make your photos truly meaningful. When I offer Fall Mini Sessions, those are more directed and have a more traditional portrait stye.
-
Yes, I do! I excel at capturing traditional family and children’s portraits. In fact, having honed my skills photographing in a documentary style has made me especially adept at creating posed portraits with speed and ease. My Fall Mini Sessions are a terrific way to get a small set of traditional family portraits for framing, gifting, and holiday cards. Joining my email list will give you early access to Fall Mini Sessions when they open for booking each year.

My style is a blend of documentary and fine art, emphasizing natural light, thoughtful composition, and authentic emotion. Every session is curated to create images that feel personal, intriguing, and heirloom-worthy, perfect for families in Washington DC and the surrounding areas.

A one-hour session includes 40–60 minutes of shooting at your home or a favorite location. You’ll receive approximately 40–50 professionally edited digital images, plus a $100 print credit for curated prints, albums, or framed artwork delivered directly from my professional photo lab to your home.

The Annual Pass is ideal for families who value continuity, storytelling, and a long-term relationship with their photographer. It’s perfect for those who want their life documented thoughtfully, capturing milestones, everyday moments, and seasonal changes year after year. I also recommend the Annual Pass for families with children who might feel camera shy or have a diagnosis that can make traditional photos more difficult. The easy pace and authentic relationship developed in annual pass sessions support children (and adults) with special needs.
-
With over 20 years experience photographing children, I excel at photographing children with autism or other special needs. Many children need a gentler pace and a more cooperative approach to making their picture. My documentary experience allows me to photograph children beautifully without needing to overwhelm them with requests. I am comfortable adjusting direction and pacing even in more traditional portrait settings to ensure that children with special needs are photographed with respect and joy.

Most importantly: you do you! Choose coordinated, comfortable outfits in colors that complement your home or chosen location. I focus on natural, timeless styling to ensure your photographs feel authentic and cohesive for years to come. If you envision more traditional portraits, you can find outfit advice on my blog here. If you’re planning documentary sessions at home you should definitely wear things that you love and feel good wearing.

I love to photograph bar and bat mitzvahs! Those are a custom session, and you can use the contact form on my website to request my base package quote, or we can develop a custom package that suits your exact needs. I’ve photographed bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs all over the Washington DC region and can share references if you’d like to hear directly from a parent about how well my photography met their celebration photo needs.

I am a big believer in using my talents to help support my community. Rather than one-off donations, I have developed a one-of-a-kind family mini portrait fundraiser which I have successfully implemented in collaboration with many local elementary school PTA and school-home associations. The format is easily adaptable to all sorts of organizations and I would love to share more information with you about this. You can download an informational PDF here.
