The Time Capsule Portrait: a new twist on the traditional family photo

Have you ever made a time capsule?

I sadly admit that I haven't. But I dinstinctly remember seeing episodes of TV shows where they did, or where they opened old ones left behind. I always wanted to do that. I really did! Like making your own little museum and letting it speak for you into the future.

It's not a far leap to think about photographs as time capsules.

But what if we took the metaphor even farther? What if we deliberately created a time capsule photograph, filled with artifacts of who we are today, in this moment: artifacts that speak to how we spend our time, what we love, what holds meaning for us?

I've been quietly collaborating with with some families on this idea. We've made some exciting, one-of-a-kind portraits by curating their most delightful “artifacts”, then artfully arranging a portrait that holds all these hints to what each member of the family is up to at this moment in life. Tucked into each of these portraits are favorite clothing and foods, mementos to travel, yard games, musical instruments, stuffies kept since babyhood, houseplants, and tools of happy hobbies.

So I’m proud to introduce The Time-Capsule Portrait

A Time Capsule Portrait of Lia and her children, Takoma Park, MD

The setting for each portrait is your own yard.

The curation is a collaboration between you and me: I'll give your some direction to choose things, then when I come over I'll also look around and suggest some things that you might have overlooked, but that defintely tell a little more of the story of your people.

The portrait is a refreshing and open-hearted Moment in Time that will stand as a testament to your family, perfectly present exactly as you are today.

(I'll spend a few minutes setting everything up in an ideal spot in your yard, arranging your crew, and taking the portrait. I'll even help put things back afterward.)

Include anyone you want to be in the photo - from immediate family to dear relatives, pets, besties or who/what-ever says "family" to you. Even if that is your own solo self!

The curation and shoot time is about 40 minutes total, at your home, and don't worry: you don't have to do ANYTHING special other than think about what special items to collect for the picture. I'll walk you through each step.

Your session will include one digital file and one 8x10 or 10x10 print of your Time Capsule Portrait to keep.
