About Katie Jett Walls
Katie is a documentary photographer specializing in families, and long form documentary projects. A proud resident of the District, Katie lives in a DC rowhouse with her nerdy husband and precocious kindergartener. Though her family would tell you all she ever does is take pictures, or talk about pictures, in fact she also reads lots of British crime novels, drinks coffee with the other school moms, and binge watches all the best shows.
"I am a selfish artist. I came of age in a conservative home that valued separation from people different than us. Photography, for me, is a way to reclaim my experience of the beautiful and diverse world. My family photography is increasingly influenced by traditional documentary work. In each genre, the flash of an expression, a gesture, a twist of the unexpected, or a moment of connection hold a soulfulness that moves me to my core. My photography is my way of honoring every person’s authenticity – from strangers on the street to my client’s families, and to my own son. In honoring their authenticity, I come closer to knowing my own."
